For almost 50 years, your Fairbanks Senior Center has been providing services and programs that not only alleviate hunger, they allow seniors to live independently with dignity in their own homes. This year brought new and unique challenges as the COVID-19 pandemic reached our community. As COVID continues to spread, safely feeding and caring for our seniors is essential.

The Fairbanks Senior Center has seen its fair share of challenges over the years, and yet, our goal to end senior hunger and isolation has never wavered. 2020 was our most challenging year yet, still, we know we can count on the compassion and determination of our staff, volunteers, and supporters like you, to meet the needs of the seniors in our community.

Despite the challenges that have arisen from COVID-19, we have a lot of victories to report for 2020. We want to make sure you know how much you, as volunteers and donors, are doing to help mitigate the effects of the pandemic in our community.

Together we have:

  • Safely delivered over 37,000 delicious, nutritious meals to hundreds of our homebound seniors and disabled neighbors from April to October 2020;
  • Helped 12 local senior veterans with critical home repairs and modifications to improve safety and accessibility through the Helping Homebound Heroes Grant Program;
  • Provided community connections and a social support network to homebound seniors through our new Silver Squad Telephone Wellness Check Program; and
  • Organized volunteers who delivered groceries, household supplies, prescriptions, emergency food boxes, and produce from local markets. All while keeping everyone socially distanced and safe.

Since the pandemic began, our top priority has been to protect the health and safety of those we serve, our dedicated volunteers, and our hard-working staff. We are very proud of what we have been able to accomplish this year, and we are grateful to you for volunteering, donating food and supplies, and contributing to our operating costs at this critical moment. Our community is capable of amazing things when we work together.

The Fairbanks Senior Center’s Meals on Wheels Program is honored to have been selected as a recipient of the Co-op Market Grocery & Deli Lend-A-Hand Program.

In May of 2020, the Co-op Market Grocery & Deli shoppers had the opportunity to round up their shopping bill to the nearest dollar and donate the difference to Meals on Wheels Fairbanks. The Co-op Market Grocery & Deli shopper’s pennies added up to $2,923.63!

Our heartfelt thanks to the Co-op Market Grocery & Deli, and their generous shoppers, who help the seniors in our community remain in their homes, living with dignity and respect. We stand together against isolation and hunger, because nobody deserves to be hungry, left behind, or forgotten.

We rely on the generosity of our community to keep our wheels turning and end the hunger and isolation of our senior neighbors. To find out how you can become a Meals on Wheels Community Supporter, please email [email protected].
