Meals On Wheels
The Meals on Wheels Program is operating at full pace again! We still need more volunteer drivers for the program. If you need anything, call the Senior Center at 452-1735
Meals On Wheels is state funded program for qualified individuals.
Since the 1950s, Congress has provided funding—through the Older Americans Act—which helps run community-based senior nutrition programs, such as Meals on Wheels, across the nation. In 1973, the Fairbanks Senior Center established the first Meals on Wheels program in the interior of Alaska; to this day, we are still the only one!
With help from our wonderful volunteer drivers, we serve home bound seniors and disabled individuals a hot lunch 5 days a week.
Last year we served 405 individuals—a 59% increase from the year before—for a total of 76,927 meals served. Unfortunately, our funding has not kept pace with this growth; we are able to continue the program thanks to generous support from the community.
This program is a critical program helping our Seniors stay in their home as long as possible. We, the staff of the Senior Center, are extremely proud of being a part of this program which helps so many folks. If you have a few extra dollars please donate to the fund so that we are able to continue to do what we do for our elders.
