Silver Squad

Silver Squad

Many vulnerable seniors who routinely visited the Center before the COVID-19 pandemic are now extremely isolated. This has created mental health risks from lack of socialization, and other stress as they may be unable to find help for daily tasks. Additionally, we now deliver meals socially distanced to keep our recipients safe, circumventing the daily, in-person wellness checks ordinarily provided by our drivers to ensure mental and physical well-being.

In March of 2020, we recognized this need and diverted some funds from the Meals on Wheels program to create the ‘Silver Squad’ program, which provides daily wellness checks, and crucial errand runs for these seniors. The community response was nearly overwhelming. In fiscal year 2021, our volunteers conducted almost 9,000 wellness calls, and almost 700 errand runs.

Considering the incredible increase in demand for both Meals on Wheels and Silver Squad services, we are determined to continue both programs, despite the lack of increased funding. If you appreciate these programs and support their continued presence in our community, please consider donating.

We are constantly in-need of passionate volunteers for Silver Squad, as they are the backbone of the program. If you feel you are available to talk with local seniors to assess their needs or run a couple simple vital errands, consider becoming a part of the Silver Squad Wellness Callers or Errand Runners! The commitment is only about 1-3 hours a week. Thank you to our current and past volunteers! This program would not exist without your generous support.
